Nonprofit website design in Hamilton that turns visitors into donors
Someone deciding whether to give you money, time or their trust is checking you first. We build nonprofit websites that answer that: a page for every programme, a donate flow that produces a receipt the CRA accepts, and proof of where the money goes. Flat-quoted from $1,499.
Built around how people decide to give
Donor data handled properly from day one
Three to six weeks, start to launch

Overview
This page is for Hamilton-area charities and nonprofits — volunteer-run groups up to mid-sized registered charities — that need a website a first-time donor trusts and a board can stand behind. Most projects land between $1,499 and $4,999, quoted flat before work begins, with a typical timeline of three to six weeks. If you need something larger or more custom, we will tell you that on the first call rather than after a deposit.
Nonprofit website design has a different job
Someone about to donate is doing a quick trust check. They want to know within a few seconds what you actually do, where the money goes, and whether you are a registered charity. A slow page with a broken donate button loses the gift, and you rarely get a second attempt.
That is what shapes our approach to nonprofit website design in Hamilton: one clear page per programme rather than a single overloaded “What we do” page, plain-language impact reporting, and a donate flow that works on a phone in under a minute.
We also work inside the rules you are held to. The CRA’s requirements for official donation receipts, the difference between a tax credit and a deduction, and donor privacy all sit inside the build rather than being bolted on at the end.
Who it fits
Registered charities, volunteer-run groups, community associations, and established organisations whose site has not been touched in five or more years.
Who it does not
National organisations needing enterprise CRM builds, custom grant-management software, or a full brand identity built from zero.
What you own
Your domain, your hosting, your content, and a WordPress site you can update without calling us. No proprietary platform lock-in.
Process
How a nonprofit website project actually runs
Five stages, three to six weeks for most organisations: an intake call and programme map, content and structure, design, build with the donate flow and privacy, then launch and handover. The slow part is almost always board approval, so we build the schedule around your meeting dates rather than ours.
01
Intake call & programme map
Which programmes need to be understood, which campaigns you run, who you are competing with for the same donor, and what your board needs to see. We leave with a page map and a flat quote.
02
Content & structure
We draft programme copy in plain language and send it for your review. Nothing describing your work or your outcomes is published without someone at your organisation signing off.
03
Design
Home page and one programme-page template first, so you are approving a real layout rather than a mood board. Two rounds of revisions included.
04
Build, donate flow & privacy
WordPress build, a donate flow wired to your processor, accessibility pass against WCAG 2.1 AA, speed tuning, and a review of every claim about outcomes on the site.
05
Launch & handover
We migrate, test the donate flow end to end with a real card, connect analytics and Google Business Profile, then walk your staff and volunteers through editing pages themselves.
Why choose Back9
What a nonprofit site needs that a generic template misses
Most website packages are built for restaurants and trades. A charity carries obligations a template has never heard of: what an official donation receipt must contain, how a tax credit differs from a deduction, what you may claim about outcomes, and how donor data is handled. These are the things we handle differently, every time.
Tax credit, not tax deduction
Individual donors in Canada receive a non-refundable tax credit, not a deduction — and a surprising number of charity donate pages still say the wrong one. We write the page so the wording matches what the donor actually gets, and so your registration number sits where a cautious donor looks for it.
A real page per programme
Someone searching for emergency housing support should land on that programme, not a services list. Each programme gets its own page, its own explanation of who it is for, and its own way to give or get help.
A donate flow that does not lose the gift
One screen, works on a phone, no forced account creation, monthly giving offered without a fight, and the amount suggestions set from your own data rather than a template’s defaults.
Donor privacy in how we work
We will sign your confidentiality agreement, keep staging sites private and unindexed, and never use donor records as portfolio material. Donations go to your processor, not through us.
Receipts that stand up to the CRA
A donate button is only as good as the receipt it produces. The CRA sets out exactly what an official donation receipt must contain — your registration number, a unique serial number, the eligible amount, any advantage received, and the name and website address of the CRA . Plenty of off-the-shelf donate buttons produce none of that. We also hold the site to the AODA accessibility standard, because the people you serve are disproportionately the people a bad website shuts out.
Ontario-specific, not imported
CRA receipting rules and AODA accessibility expectations are Canadian and Ontario problems. An imported American template is built around 501(c)(3) language that does not apply here, and it will happily tell your donors their gift is tax deductible. We build to the rules you are actually held to.

Photography
Photography that looks like your work
Photography is where most nonprofit website design quietly falls down. People give to people, not to logos. Photographs of the work actually happening do more for trust than any impact statistic we could format, so we plan and art-direct photography into the build. The images here are illustrative.
Consent-first photography, with a written release for everyone identifiable and a clear policy for participants who decline.
A shot of the space or the team, which quietly confirms you are a real organisation doing real work.
A shot list and direction before the shoot, plus compression and sizing after, so photos never slow the site down.
If you already have photography you like, we will work with what you have and only reshoot what is letting the page down.
Work in accountable sectors
Websites we have built where trust is the product
Organisations where trust is the product are a core part of what we build. Every project below started with the same questions: what does this group actually do, how does a cautious first-time visitor decide to act, and how do you explain complicated work in plain language.

What we can and cannot show you
No traffic charts, no donation totals, no rankings. We do not publish performance figures for clients, and we are not going to invent any to fill this section.
On a call we will walk you through these sites live and show you more of our web design portfolio, explain the reasoning behind each decision, and answer questions about our Hamilton work in other sectors in full.

FAQ
Questions boards ask us first
Six questions boards actually ask on the first call — about donation processors, ranking guarantees, donor privacy, who writes the programme content, and what happens after launch. If yours is not here, ask it on the call. We would rather answer a hard question early than have it surface halfway through a build.
Will the donate flow work with our processor?
Usually, yes. We wire donations to CanadaHelps, Zeffy, Stripe, Keela or whatever your board has already approved, rather than pushing you onto something new. If your processor issues the official receipt, we make sure the donor is told so clearly on the confirmation screen.
Can you guarantee we will rank first for our cause?
No, and neither can anyone else honestly — search results are controlled by Google, not by your web designer. What we control is the technical foundation, the programme pages, the content quality and the local signals. Any agency promising a specific position is selling you something it cannot deliver.
How do you handle donor data and privacy?
We sign your confidentiality agreement before we see anything sensitive, keep staging sites password-protected and hidden from search engines, and never reuse donor records as portfolio material. Donations go straight to your processor — card details never touch the website or us.
Who writes the content for our programme pages?
We draft it and someone at your organisation approves it. You know the work; nonprofit website design is our side of it, and that includes making the page readable to someone who has never heard of your organisation. Nothing describing your outcomes goes live without your sign-off.
What happens after launch — are we locked into a contract?
No. You own the domain, the hosting account, and the site. Care plans for updates, backups and monitoring are month to month and cancellable. If you would rather maintain it in-house, we hand over the site and train your staff to do exactly that.
Do you only work with organisations in Hamilton?
No. Our nonprofit website design work is based in Hamilton and most of our clients are in the surrounding area — Burlington, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas and Grimsby — but we work with organisations across Ontario, and remotely beyond it. Meetings run by video or in person if you are close by.
